The forecast has moved from "possible" to "very likely". On 19 August, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the chance of El Niño reaching the very strong or "Super El Niño" category between October and December is now above 90 per cent, and that the event is expected to peak towards the end of the year (Malay Mail).
For most farms, El Niño 2026 in Malaysia is not really a weather story. It is a water story. And the bill usually arrives late.
What does El Niño 2026 mean for Malaysia's farms?
El Niño is a warming of the central Pacific Ocean that shifts rainfall patterns across our region. In simple terms for us: less rain, more heat, more dry days in a row.
MetMalaysia has already warned that these conditions raise the risk of water shortages, forest and peatland fires, and haze (Malay Mail, June 2026).
We have seen this before. During the 1997–98 El Niño, palm oil production fell, rice planting stopped across northern Malaysia, Selangor went into scheduled water rationing, and Sabah and Sarawak suffered forest and peat fires. Researchers quoted by The Edge Malaysia put the total economic loss across affected sectors at roughly RM12.87 billion.
That is the scale. But the important detail for a farm manager is the timing.
Why the damage shows up in 2027, not 2026
This is the part most news coverage misses.
Oil palm does not fail immediately when it gets dry. The palm protects itself first. Under water stress it slows frond production, aborts young bunches, and shifts its male-to-female flower ratio. Those decisions are made inside the palm months before you see them in the weighbridge ticket.
The result is a gap of roughly six to twelve months between the drought and the drop in fresh fruit bunch output. A dry October 2026 can show up as a weak crop in mid-2027. The same experts quoted by The Edge expect the impact on oil palm to appear from late 2026 through 2027.
Paddy is faster and more brutal. If irrigation water is short at land preparation or at the flowering stage, you lose that season outright — there is no delay and no recovery.
So the planning question is not "how do I survive this month". It is: what do I do now so that my 2027 harvest is not decided for me?
How much rain does your crop actually need?
Most of us talk about rain in feelings — "quite dry lately". Numbers are more useful.
MetMalaysia's agroclimatic guidance puts the optimal monthly rainfall for our two main crops at around 200–300 mm for paddy and 150–200 mm for oil palm (MetMalaysia agroclimatic outlook).
Write those two numbers on the wall of your office. If you install nothing else this year, install a rain gauge and record the reading weekly per block. When you can say "this block received 90 mm last month against a 200 mm requirement", you can make a decision. When all you can say is "quite dry", you cannot.
What should you do in the next 60 days?
The Southwest Monsoon runs until around September, and the Northeast Monsoon follows from November. That gives you a short window to prepare before the driest stretch. A practical list:
- Audit your water sources block by block. Ponds, drains, tube wells, scheme intakes. Note which blocks have no backup at all — those are your first casualties.
- Store water while you still can. MetMalaysia has publicly urged agencies to use the Northeast Monsoon period to store water. The same logic applies at farm scale: clean out reservoirs and check bunds now, not in January.
- Repair before you need it. Leaking pipes, broken pumps and silted drains are cheap to fix in September and impossible to fix in a queue in December.
- Protect soil moisture. Empty fruit bunch mulch, frond stacking and ground cover all reduce evaporation. Bare soil under a hot sun loses water fast.
- Rethink fertiliser timing. Fertiliser applied into dry soil is not taken up well and can burn roots. Plan splits around expected rain rather than around the calendar.
- Treat fire as a real risk, especially on peat. Clear dry material near boundaries, keep water access points open, and agree now who is responsible for what if a fire starts nearby.
- Talk to your scheme or IADA office early if you are in a granary area. Water allocation decisions are made before planting, not during.
- Start recording. Rainfall, soil moisture, irrigation hours, and which blocks showed stress first.
Why record-keeping matters more in a drought year
That last point sounds like the least urgent one. It is the one that pays for the longest.
When yields fall in 2027, you will be asked to explain why — by a buyer, a bank, an auditor, or a business partner. There is a very large difference between "it was a bad year" and "these eleven blocks received under half their required rainfall from October to January, here is the record". The first is an excuse. The second is evidence, and evidence is what gets you flexibility on contracts and financing.
Records also tell you which parts of your land are genuinely weak. Drought does not hit a farm evenly. It exposes the blocks with poor drainage, thin soil or no water access — the same blocks that quietly underperform every year. The honest summary
Nobody can stop a Super El Niño. What you can control is how much of it you can see, how early you see it, and how well you can prove what happened afterwards.
Farms that go into this dry season with a rain gauge, a water plan and a habit of recording will make better decisions in December and have a far better argument in 2027. Farms that do not will be guessing.
